Risk Mapping of Kabupaten Ende on Flores Island

Background

Kabupaten Ende on Flores island is an extremely mountainous area with several peaks exceeding 1500 m in height and only few plains of limited extent. Slopes are mostly very steep and with the beginning rainy season, landslides, rockfalls and debris falls are likely to occur. Additionally, Flores island, as a segment of the volcanic inner Banda Arc, possesses several very active volcanoes and is of high seismic activity. These geological hazards pose a serious threat not only to peoples’ lifes but also to the social and economic development of Kabupten Ende in Nusa Tenggara Timur Province.
Objective

Supporting the local government, the Georisk-Project aims at generating an examplary georisk analysis for Kabupaten Ende, NTT Province. Therefore, in a first step geological hazards from landslides, volcanic eruption and earthquakes, all posing a serious threat to the sustainable development of Kabupaten Ende, will be identified. Subsequently, actual settlement patterns, infrastructure and economic potential will be taken into account to assess the risk to these geological hazards. Results of the risk assessment for Kabupaten Ende will support local governments and other intermediaries who are commissioned to implement disaster mitigation countermeasures at the local level. Emphasize will be put on promoting awareness among stakeholders for the inclusion of georisk aspects in mid- and long-term spatial planning.

Cooperation

The initiative is based on the cooperation of the Georisk-Project (Badan Geologi, BGR and GTZ) with Bappeda Kabupaten Ende, NTT Province. Data aquisition and analysis is done by the Center for Environmental Geology, Center for Geological Survey and the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation of Badan Geologi.Socialization of the activity results will be organized by Bappeda Kabupaten Ende and be conducted in collaboration with Badan Geologi.
