Risk Mapping of D.I. Yogyakarta

Background

DI Yogyakarta is an area that is highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis, these posing serious threats to people’s life as well as to sustainable economic development of the province. Precise spatial planning that takes into account both, existing geological hazards and economic baseline information, can help reducing disaster risks severely, as it incorporates means of prevention, mitigation and preparedness. In terms of hazard and risk maps, DIY is one of the best covered areas of Indonesia. Especially as a result of the earthquake in May 2006, there is a huge amount of data available at various institutions but so far none of the existing hazard or risk maps have been implemented in the spatial plan for DIY.

Objective

Georisk analyses provide important information to back budgeting and planning decisions for disaster prone areas and consequently have to be implemented in spatial planning processes. Therefore, the Georisk-Project consults Bapeda DIY in providing a set of risk map based on variable vulnerability indicators. As a further step towards the development of integrative risk mitigation measures, the Georisk-Project facilitates so-called “Round Table Georisks” to discuss issues of handling georisks through spatial planning, awareness raising and community participation. These discussions will also strengthen networking between stakeholders for mutual support on disaster risk reduction.

Cooperation

Enhancing cooperation and coordination between various stakeholders, Bappeda DIY has invited the Georisk-Project to join existing forums and to support the implementation of findings in provincial and local risk mitigation strategies.
